12:10 What Katrina tells people who say that they find sales and marketing difficult and want to know how to do it easily and authentically.

I love to work with people who have unlimited earning potential. So mostly coaches and consultants because you can charge whatever the heck you want. When people ask me,  ‘How much should I charge for this or my hour, whatever?’ I say, ‘As much as you can say without stuttering is what you should charge’. But when you’re selling a widget or a roof, you can only charge so much. When you’re charging for your own expertise and your time, it’s really unlimited. I mean, I’ve paid $18,000 for one day with somebody before, right? So, you can charge whatever you want. People are so scared – they’re scared sometimes to raise their rates. And you have got to get beyond that. They say, ‘Well, the people aren’t even buying at the rate that I have now’. Well, that’s because you’re not talking to enough of the right people.” – Katrina Sawa

Katrina Sawa  01:56
Hi, Rennie. Thanks for having me.

Rennie Gabriel  01:58
Oh, it's great.

Katrina Sawa  01:59
And I love talking about money, making more money, saving money...

Rennie Gabriel  02:04
Yeah, and so do I which is why we have this podcast.

Katrina Sawa  02:08
Good.

Rennie Gabriel  02:09
So there's a lot of things in your bio. So tell me in a short way, not only what you do, but why you're doing it.

Katrina Sawa  02:19
Hmm. Well, back when I had a J O B, my one of my last jobs was working for the local newspaper here in Sacramento, California. And I was supposed to go out and sell ads in the paper, right. And that was 22, 23 years ago, a long time. And I would just see these entrepreneurs and business owners go out of business because they just didn't know what they were doing. And they would just throw darts and throw their business cards at me and say, run the business card in the paper. And I'd be like, 'No, that's not what you put in the paper. Nobody cares about your logo, and your fax number'. So like, I had to really teach them and educate them on not only what to put in the ad, but then what to do with people when they came in for follow up and building a database and all these other things that they could do in store that were free and they didn't have to spend money on advertising. So it's just I realized there were so many people that just, they knew their thing, but they didn't know how to really market and sell and consistently build revenue with their thing.

Rennie Gabriel  03:19
So apparently, you found that frustrating, and is that why you're doing what you're doing?

Katrina Sawa  03:24
That is. That's the biggest why of what I do. I've been doing it for 21 years now. And all kinds of businesses now. So it's super fun to find, to help all different kinds of businesses, some people niche, you know, I niche with wanting to make more money. I can help a roofing company, a shamanic healer, a brick and mortar gift store, a shoe store, I don't even care. Like it doesn't matter what kind of business you're in. It's about those relationships. And then really more if you have to get in front of more people more often and in more ways, in order to get more money.

Rennie Gabriel  04:00
So what I'm hearing is that leads are the lifeblood of the business, and if you don't know what to do with the customer when they show up, it doesn't make any difference.

Katrina Sawa  04:09
Yeah, there's so many people that just focus on getting new leads, new leads, new leads, instead of nurturing the ones you have to really keep buying and referring and upselling you know, there's you have to do all of it. And so it is overwhelming for some people that aren't really business-oriented. They like their product or service, but they don't have the business sense. You got to learn it, you got to learn it or you're going to go out of business.

Rennie Gabriel  04:34
I get it. And well, now as you're aware, I donate 100% of the profits from the work that I do - my books, programs - to various charities. Tell me about the cause or charity that's important to you that you support.

Katrina Sawa  04:48
Yeah. Well, I do work with a lot of nonprofits. So I have some nonprofits, I give them big discounts or things like that. So I love to help nonprofit entrepreneurs, first of all. But then, my husband before we got married, when we were engaged, we got, we got engaged. And three weeks later, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. And so we had to put off the wedding about a year. And he got through it, and he's fine today, many years later, but, so cancer is one of those things. Now my mom has lung cancer, my stepsister had breast cancer. I mean, there's a lot of my dad had colon cancer. I mean, there's just a lot of cancer around me. And I hope to God, it's not going to be in me anytime soon. I've been, you know, but like, so cancer is one of those things that is near and dear to my heart. And you know, my husband and I will watch a show and if someone has cancer, we're crying on the sofa, because he could have died, you know, so that.

Rennie Gabriel  05:44
Well, I like what you had to say about all the different kinds of businesses from a shamanic healer to a roofer, was there any specialty you started with, or is there a favorite market that you work with?

Katrina Sawa  06:01
Well, I love to work with people who have unlimited earning potential. So mostly coaches, consultants, you know, because you can charge whatever the heck you want. I say, when people ask me, like, 'How much should I charge for this or my hour, whatever?' I say as much as you can say without stuttering is what you should charge, right? But when you're selling a widget, or you know, a roof, you can only charge so much. And so when you're charging for your own expertise and your time, it's really unlimited. I mean, I've paid $18,000 for one day with somebody before, right? So I mean, you can charge whatever you want, and people are so scared. They're scared sometimes to raise their rates. And it's just you got to get beyond that. They say, 'Well, the people aren't even buying at the rate that I have now'. Well, that's because you're not talking to enough people.

Rennie Gabriel  06:50
Or the right people.

Katrina Sawa 06:51
Yeah, enough of the right people. Right? Yeah.

Rennie Gabriel  06:55
Yeah. I love hearing that. That's got to be something we point out on the podcast in the show notes, for sure. Now, a little bit more of a personal question, what would you say was your biggest failure or challenge, whatever you want to call it, and whether it was personal or business? And so it's a two-part question, what was your biggest insight from that?

Katrina Sawa  06:55
Yeah. Well, I don't necessarily consider things like that failures, I consider them lessons, right? So I have a personal story where I had my starter husband, and I thought he was going to support me when I started a business, but he ended up not supporting me. And so I did have to leave that marriage. And then, you know, do a bunch of online dating and then finally found the keeper husband through online dating. So the relationship stuff, that's important to getting where you want to go. I don't know that that was a mistake but it was a lesson. And I had to learn how to really hold my own and be on my own and be my own entrepreneur, you know, making money that way. One of the business lessons I've learned is that I had a big ego in the beginning, as you know, and I would hire mentors for 20 or $30,000 for the year, and then not take their advice and do what they say, I would say, 'Thank you for the advice, but I think I'm going to do it this way.' That could have made me a lot more money faster had I maybe listened a little bit. But you know, I was in tune with my gut and my intuition, and I think it was for the better because they were trying to pin me, you know, pigeonhole me into this when I wanted to do a whole bunch of other things. I don't know. So those are some lessons.

Katrina Sawa  07:16
Yeah. Then what I'm hearing is that if you're paying someone for their advice, I guess at least test it out.

Rennie Gabriel  08:36
Yes. Yeah. I have people every once in a while that don't listen to me. And I'm like, 'Okay, but you're going to waste months of time if you don't do what I tell you'.

Rennie Gabriel  08:54
Yeah, you've already gone through it, you know.

Katrina Sawa  08:57
Exactly.

Rennie Gabriel  08:58
Well, give me an example of a particular client, like a case study, you know, where they were, what you did with them and what the outcome was?

Katrina Sawa  09:06
Yeah. I mean, I have a lot but there's one gal, Miranda, she was in New York City, and she was single at the time. And she's a personal trainer and a fitness trainer, right? So she, but she would do it on site, on location. So she would actually go to people's homes and offices and do a workout with them. And then she would run classes at gyms. And so she was running all over New York City all day every day, running herself ragged. What she really wanted, though, was a happy marriage and some kids, right? That's what she really wanted. And she wasn't finding it doing all the things like a Tasmanian devil all over New York City. So we created a different business model for her like an online membership where she could teach from her living room, the fitness classes she built, what she, a fitness tribe, right - membership - that she's still doing today. But because that freed up some of her time, she was able to find the man, fall in love. She was told she wasn't going to be able to have any kids yet she has two boys now. And so I mean, creating your happiest life ever, with what you want in the love side of your life and the money side of your life is just, that gives me chills. I want people to have that.

Rennie Gabriel  10:27
That's such a great case study, because what you're talking about is illustrating a situation where someone can have the life they want and it's not just about growing a business.

Katrina Sawa  10:38
And she didn't see that it was possible because she's not, she didn't know that she could do training across . . . I mean, I was in California, she's in New York, and she was actually working me out over Zoom. You know, as my trainer, at one point. So . . .

Rennie Gabriel  10:53
Yeah, so you, so you knew she could do it, she just didn't know it. That's funny.

Katrina Sawa  10:58
You just don't know what you don't know, until someone opens your eyes to what else is possible.

Rennie Gabriel  11:03
Well, let me . . . I'm sure there are people who are going to want to get a hold of you. Do you have a valuable free resource that people can get that starts the conversation of knowing you more?

Katrina Sawa  11:14
Yeah, so many things. I mean, I have all free trainings web site, webpage. So there's like eight different things. You can get a couple of webinars, there's a quiz there that talks about the five areas that you have to really focus on to make more revenue, a productivity checklist. It's a lot. So on the website, the, do you want me to give the URL?

Rennie Gabriel  11:37
Is that the, jumpstart your business now dot com forward slash freetrainings?

Katrina Sawa  11:42
Yeah, but it's not business, it's biz.

Rennie Gabriel  11:45
Sorry.

Katrina Sawa  11:47
jumpstartyourbiznow.com/freetrainings/. Yes.

Rennie Gabriel  11:49
Oh, great. And so that people can just click on the link in the show notes and get to you.

Katrina Sawa  11:55
Yeah, go there.

Rennie Gabriel  11:56
All right now, well, let me ask you one more question. What is the one question I should have asked you, that would also give some great value to the people who are listening, or watching? Because this on YouTube as well.

Katrina Sawa  12:10
Yeah, I think one of the things people say a lot is 'Katrina, you know, you're really good at sales and marketing. I don't find that easy to do. And I've never been in sales and marketing, I don't really like it. How does someone like me do that easily and authentically?' And I just say you have to learn, you have to hone that skill. And I know that you don't want to, but if you want to be in business, you have to master the marketing and sales, wording, techniques, strategies. So learn from the people that can teach you those things. And the right, authentic way of doing it will come about. If you just learn from one person, you're going to have one way. I would learn from multiple people, because that's how you're going to meld your marketing and sales way -basically, yeah.

Rennie Gabriel  13:07
Got it. So the number one thing is to be able to attract more clients, it sounds like.

Katrina Sawa  13:14
Yeah, doesn't matter how good you are at your thing, or how great your product is, if you can't market it and sell it, you're not going to go far.

Rennie Gabriel  13:21
Yeah, no one's going to know you're even there, no matter how good you are. So, Katrina, I want to thank you for being on the Wealth On Any Income show.

Katrina Sawa  13:30
Yay. Thank you.
