Rennie Gabriel  00:09
Hi, folks, welcome to Episode 56 of the Wealth On Any Income Podcast. This is where we talk about money tips, techniques, attitudes, information and provide inspiration. I'm your host, Rennie Gabriel. In past episodes, we spoke about how to build an income and expense report, how to measure the level of pleasure based on where you spend your money, how to track your money in 5 - 10 seconds, what to look for on a net worth statement to see how close you are to Complete Financial Choice™, and philanthropy. And last week, we had Nancy Boyd, the creator of Soul-Based Operating Systems for people who want more out of life. Today, we have as our guest, Barry Shore. Barry is the man who was completely paralyzed overnight from a rare disease and went on to build a system to enable you to live in joy on a daily basis. Barry is the Ambassador of Joy. His mission is to transform the world through joy! He is also a successful serial entrepreneur with two exits and three issued patents. His journey to regain mobility pushed him to go M.A.D. - Make A Difference. To that end, his best-selling book, The Joy of Living, was published, as well as barryshore.com and the JOY of LIVING Institute™ were born. Barry, welcome to the Wealth On Any Income Podcast.

Barry Shore  01:44
Good day beautiful, bountiful beloved mortal beings, and good-looking people. Now, Rennie, how can I make the categorical statement that all the thousands and tens of thousands of people that are listening and will listen are all good looking? Because by definition, if they tuned in, they listen to you on about Wealth On Any Income, they're always looking for and finding the good. That's a good looking person. Looking for and finding the good because that's what you discuss. And I'm humbled and honored to be here to talk about and share with your audience these most important aspects of life, which touch upon of course, happiness, health, and wealth. You want all three together. Thank you for enabling me to be here.

Rennie Gabriel  02:34
You got it. Thank you for being on the show. Well, let's get to some questions. Like, what do you do and why?

Barry Shore  02:47
Well, thank you for that great softball Here's what I do. People ask me by the way, Barry Shore, you look like a nice guy. You're very happy. You're upbeat. What do you do? Meaning, what do you do for a living? That's what people, right? What do you do? What do you do? A doctor, lawyer, Indian chief? I say yes. All of that. But here's what I do. I answer and then I get a incredulous look. I spread joy, happiness, peace and love. And then there's a pause and people say yeah. I mean, yeah, but how do you make money? I said, I spread joy, happiness, peace and love. Because when you do that with real passion and purpose and power, you do it pleasantly, then the attitude of wealth attracts the ability to do business. And you know this better than anybody, Rennie. Because you have built businesses that are self-perpetuating, recurring revenue. You know the secret of compound interest. You understand the secret of giving. And by the way, this is a categorical point of information and also a categorical mistake for 99.99% of all people who are chasing money.

Rennie Gabriel  03:57
Yeah.

Barry Shore  03:57
We don't chase money. We attract money. And when you attract money, then you can attract and build wealth. Wealth depends first and foremost, on a mindset. When the mindset is in place, and it connects the mind and the heart and the soul, then the attractiveness comes out. And you will be, not just amazed, and you won't be surprised, you will be able to do what you're supposed to do in the world, which is . . . to be of service. And that's what Rennie does by the way. This whole show is about service. He's not doing it for self-aggrandizement. He's not doing it to show off his wonderful dark locks on his hair at the advanced age of 70+. He's doing it to enable others because this is what others, this is what winners do. Winners help others. That's the acronym for WHO. What does he do? He helps others win. That's the acronym for HOW. So WHO and HOW get together and then what Rennie does is he provides the following: winners inspire never ending endurance. Why? Never ending endurance, every day. So this is what I do. Thank you for asking. And I've done it, thank God, for decades, and I've been able to attract not only money and wealth, but even more importantly, Rennie, good people.

Rennie Gabriel  05:24
Yes.

Barry Shore  05:25
Good people, because that's, that's what . . .that's what makes everything work.

Rennie Gabriel  05:28
Exactly. And this sounds like you're doing a major commercial for me. Thank you, Barry. And the reality is I am surrounded by good people, such as yourself and others. And well, because the point in my business is to create philanthropists, let me ask you, if there's a specific charity that you support, and what they do,

Barry Shore  05:55
So let me share with you an idea and I mean - I don't like the word mean, interestingly enough. People ask me is there anything you don't like that you hate? I said, yes, mean people. And by the way, just to go in and a little have a lot of fun together . . . Mean is a very interesting word. Because in business, especially in accounting, it makes a difference. There's a difference between the mean and the average. And unless you know, the difference, by the way, or to be able to discriminate the two, you can actually lose a lot of money. Right? The mean income, the monitor, the average income, etc, etc. But I am very particular when I use my words, as you know, you read my book, and we talk about the eleven strategies for living in joy daily, no matter the circumstances. One of those strategies is your words matter. So I actually try to avoid the word charity. I use the word cause. So yes, I have a particular cause. The cause that I have been championing this past year, is the cause that enabled me to become paralyzed. You hear that? That enabled me . . .

Rennie Gabriel  07:06
That just kind of fell out funny. Go ahead.

Barry Shore  07:08
I'll just do it. Just imagine everybody, and I'll answer his question with a name in just a moment and imagine this - standing up hale and hearty. It was September 17, 2004. Standing up hale and hearty, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and that evening, be in the hospital, totally, completely paralyzed. And it was not an automobile accident. It was not a spinal injury. A rare disease that I never heard of the day before, called Guillain-Barré syndrome, GBS for the condescending, took over my body and rendered me quadriplegic. Nothing on my body moved. Nothing. I could barely move my head. That's it. Nothing on my body. I was in the hospital 144 days. I was in a hospital bed in my own home for two years. I couldn't turn over by myself. I was in a wheelchair for four years. I had braces on both my legs, my hips, my ankles. And that was progress. Thank God today, I'm able to be vertical and ambulatory with the help of a seven-foot walking wand. But I still can't walk up a step by myself and can't walk off a curb by myself. I have help 12 hours a day, seven days a week, but you hear in my voice, positive, purposeful, powerful, and pleasant. So the name of this particular situation is called Guillain-Barré syndrome. Guillain, these are two French doctors. In English Guillain is William. And the other doctors name was Barré, not Barry, B A R R E.  Accent de grave. It's also known as French polio. And I champion this particular syndrome, we don't call it a disease, but it's a syndrome because they don't know if it's a virus or how it's passed on. But it's in the news right now, Rennie. Now, this particular show, we don't want to give a date. But we're in the midst, we're coming out of a pandemic. And there are vaccines that are helping people avoid getting really ill with the COVID and such.

Rennie Gabriel  08:57
Yes.

Barry Shore  08:57
Well, the unfortunate situation with vaccines is that oftentimes, not always, but oftentimes, the unforeseen circumstances trigger negative results. And as it was with the flu shots years ago, it triggered an outbreak, which by the way, is very rare, one in 200,000 people get it. Well right now people who are getting vaccines, there's a number of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome triggered by the vaccine. And it happens to be it's an autoimmune disease. So it's inherited in the being. So it's not that the vaccine gave this disease, it triggered the response. Now in my particular case, it was not as a result of anything other than something happened and it triggered in my body. So that's the the cause that I support. As I said, I don't, I eschew the word charity, because to me, charity, at the moment, has a sort of a negative connotation in the sense of the following. If you were to donate $100, let's say - or $1000 or $10,000 to a charity, you can rest assured that they're going to be coming after you for more.

Rennie Gabriel  10:10
Yes.

Barry Shore  10:11
Okay. In other words, you put your hand out, and then they take what you give them. But they want more. And you can't blame them. That's not them. But that's how a charity functions. And I'm using this word particularly because I want to talk about this in the course of business. In a cause-related circumstance, causes are designed, or should be, to attract people. You want to help. I love giving money, time, effort to help out Guillain-Barré Syndrome Foundation, because it does such good work. You know what I'm saying? The same thing as you do with the Shelter to Soldier™.

Rennie Gabriel  10:52
Yes.

Barry Shore  10:52
We want to help. Yes, they call themselves a charity, just because that's the term. I prefer cause, I think it's a higher level, and causes are there to attract. Let me do a little bit of a riff on on the word business, by the way, as an interesting idea. If you discuss the word business in the environment that we're living in at the moment, which is the early part of the 21st century, because I'm hoping that people will be listening to this a century from now.

Rennie Gabriel  11:19
Yeah.

Barry Shore  11:19
The early part of the 21st century, the word business today has, unfortunately, a bit of a negative connotation. It's - especially amongst people who are not in business - people who are, let's say, the ages of 18 to 27, who have been in school most of their lives, who have never actually participated in the world of either business, or sales, or marketing, or building. But if you look at the word business, you're going to find something remarkable, Rennie. Business is spelled b u s i n e s s,  correct? That's how you spell it in english. Look at the word. The letter U comes before the letter I. Business is built upon that simple, powerful foundation. Only when you understand that business is built to serve, that the U comes before the I. If it's the other way around, then it's a hustle.

Rennie Gabriel  12:24
Yes.

Barry Shore  12:24
I don't care, it could be the most, Oh, but don't you understand? We're in business to do the blah blah blah . . . But if it's the I first, it's a hustle.

Rennie Gabriel  12:32
Yeah.

Barry Shore  12:33
But really what you want to do is create, build - services, products, situations, that will be of the bent - how can I help? What can I do to be of service? So my line of work is I spread joy, happiness, peace and love. People say what do you do? I'd say, Well, I'm in the biz, I have something called the JOY of LIVING Institute. And the joy of living can be summed up in one word, Rennie. Giving. Giving is the essence of business. Giving, in my humble opinion, is the essence of building wealth. Giving is the essence of living life to the full.

Rennie Gabriel  13:13
And it's so funny because you're bringing into my consciousness, the things that I was only semi-conscious of, in why I built the business I built. So I appreciate that, Barry. Thank you.

Barry Shore  13:28
And I appreciate you, Rennie, for this opportunity. Because let's look at this. This conversation today is not about Barry Shore. Hey, great guy that he is. This conversation is not even about Rennie Gabriel - great guy that he really is. It's really about you, the person listening. Why? Y O U.

Rennie Gabriel  13:45
That's right.

Barry Shore  13:46
That's when you become the best you, you make the world a better place. You build bridges of harmony and you create more joy, happiness, peace and love. And we can't exist without you being the best you. And really what Rennie and I both subscribe to is we live with the three fundamentals of life. And these three fundamentals are number one, life has purpose.

Rennie Gabriel  14:08
Yes.

Barry Shore  14:09
When you lead a purpose-driven life, the result will be number two, you'll go MAD. And now as I said before, MAD is a great acronym. It stands for, Make A Difference. Lead a purpose-driven life, you make a difference in the world. And number three, unlock the power and the secrets of everyday words and terms. Everyday words. A simple example. Right now, this is being carried throughout the world, Rennie, over something called the Internet. Right?

Rennie Gabriel  14:36
That's right.

Barry Shore  14:37
If you ask anybody what is www stand for? And invariably, this stands for the Internet. And factually speaking they're correct. But in our world, the world of the positive, purposeful, powerful and pleasant, www stands for What a Wonderful World. And what is a word, W H A T? A wonderful word. That's www. So whenever you think now, you see, www, you say, what did that guy say? What a wonderful world. Because that's uncovering the power in the secrets of everyday words and terms.

Rennie Gabriel  15:11
That's beautiful, Barry. Thank you. So you're spreading joy.

Barry Shore  15:15
Yes.

Rennie Gabriel  15:16
Do you have a target market?

Barry Shore  15:18
Yes. Let's . . . Okay, so now he's getting into nitties and gritties, as we say. I just want to make sure that everybody understands also that these fundamentals, three fundamentals, like having a purpose, going MAD, making a difference and utilizing words and for the power of being positive, purposeful and pleasant. The result will be that you'll be happier, healthier and wealthier. So I'm going to give you a broad stroke of who the target market is. You ready?

Rennie Gabriel  15:46
Yeah.

Barry Shore  15:46
The target market for what I do in life is someone who values their time more than their money. Here's the example. There are many people that will drive two, three miles, out of their way even, to save a nickel a gallon on gasoline. You've met people like that, right?

Rennie Gabriel  16:09
Yes. Yes, I have.

Barry Shore  16:12
Right. They're going to save a nickel. Now, by the way, the regular car you find maybe of 20 gallons you save $1? But they use their time to do that. The people that I speak with and attract - remember not seeking out - attract. Or people say, look, I want what Barry Shore has. I want to live in joy daily, no matter the circumstance. I want to be happier, healthier, wealthier. How do I do it? I don't care what it costs, obviously, to an extent.

Rennie Gabriel  16:39
Yeah, right.

Barry Shore  16:40
I want to know, what are the secrets? What are the steps I need to do? My time is more valuable than my money. And I learned this, by the way from Ben Franklin. Now everybody knows Ben Franklin from the $100 bills. But Ben Franklin is a real person who lived a few 100 years ago.

Rennie Gabriel  16:59
I didn't think you were that old. I thought you were younger than that.

Barry Shore  17:03
Well, actually, he and I have gone through a lot together. And actually many, many of Ben Franklin's over the years, you know. I'm actually I'm old enough to have seen a $10,000 bill.

Rennie Gabriel  17:16
Oh, my gosh. The best I got was to see a $1,000 bill.

Barry Shore  17:20
You saw it though. A $10,000 bill was a non-negotiable bill. It was real currency. But non-negotiable. In other words, in the marketplace, it was only used for large transactions in banks. But at the age of 12, that's 60 plus years ago, I saw - my mother worked in particular industry that - it wasn't in drugs, it happened to be in diamonds. But my point is that the people that are attracted to what I offer, and I have an online course, which thank God thousands of people love because it gets results. Again, what are the results? You'll be happier, healthier, and wealthier as a result of this, and it has nothing to do with learning how to balance you know, balance sheets, which by the way, there is a part in there of it. But it's it's really about mindset, and attitude, and understanding the value of money as a mechanism of benefit. That's what I call the real MOB, mechanism of benefit you want to be I want to be a mobster this the way to do it - the Mechanism Of Benefit. That's really what money is. My target market are people who value their time so much. And they want to know, how can I save my time? Cut through stuff, and I want more of what you have, Barry Shore.

Rennie Gabriel  18:45
And I understand that because I drive by Costco and I see all the people lined up to get gasoline there, saving I don't know, 5, 10 cents a gallon, whatever it is. And I say there's no way I'm going to spend my time in that line. I'll pay a little bit more for gasoline and get on with my life.

Barry Shore  19:05
Listen to what you just said, Rennie. It's so important - because Rennie is an Oracle by the way. Now, by the way, everybody should have invested in Oracle many years ago. That's another story. Rennie is an Oracle. He said I'm not going to spend my time. So I mentioned Ben Franklin before. One of the great lines I learned from Ben Franklin years ago was, empty your purse into your mind.

Rennie Gabriel  19:29
Hmm. Hmm.

Barry Shore  19:30
I'll say it again everybody. Empty your purse into your mind. Don't think. Believe me. You know that course cost $1997. If it bothers you, so don't do it, but understand what it's about. If you will become happier, healthier, and wealthier then the money is beside the point. It's beside the...  empty your purse into your mind. It's the mindset. So when Rennie said I'm not going to spend my time. So you can only do two things with time - you can spend it... Well actually you can do three, I won't even mention the other one, but I have to say the words. You can spend it, you can invest it, or you can waste it.

Rennie Gabriel  20:13
Yeah.

Barry Shore  20:13
Now, Rennie and I wouldn't even use those words. He didn't say waste, I wouldn't waste my time. Because he's sensitive. He said I won't spend my time because time to him is extremely valuable. He recognizes it. When he does use it, he is using his time right now. He's investing a half hour of his very valuable time to bring to his audience, someone who he believes is going to be of value. That's me, Barry Shore.

Rennie Gabriel  20:41
That's right.

Barry Shore  20:42
Thank you for the opportunity, Rennie, and I do hope I'm fulfilling your - what you thought was going to happen.

Rennie Gabriel  20:48
You are.

Barry Shore  20:48
The point here is, it's the ability to use our words. You can spend your time, you can invest your time. Spending, of course, laying it out, investing is a higher level, wasting is absolutely beside the point, at some point in life, you stop doing that. Or you do it so rarely - you might say, 'Gee, I think I'm really gonna kick back for 17 minutes right now. And I don't know watch the seventh game of the World Series in the eighth inning, just to see.'

Rennie Gabriel  21:21
Yeah. Yeah. Well, okay, we do, we are going to wrap up.

Barry Shore  21:25
Oh my gosh.

Rennie Gabriel  21:26
And so I want to know if there's a valuable free resource that you can direct people to that's going to support them in knowing more about what you do.

Barry Shore  21:37
The simple answer is y e. s. And you can get it in two ways. Go to www -what a wonderful world dot barryshore dot com,  b a r r y, s h o r e. Barryshore.com. On the homepage, it says free introductory course. Click that. That's one. You can also go to barryshore.com the homepage, and you can find out what color is your stress. Maybe you'll invite me back another time. We'll talk about stress, because everybody, everybody has some stress in their life. And one of the things that I share and teach people is how to mitigate, reduce, maybe even eliminate the incorrect stress in their life. So you can also get that. It's a free, freely available. Plus some of my videos. There's lots of things available www.barryshore.com.

Rennie Gabriel  22:31
I'm going to have that in the show notes so that if they can't spell Shore correctly, there's more help than they need than I can provide. But Barry, I want to thank you for being on the show.

Rennie Gabriel  22:45
You're welcome.

Barry Shore  22:46
May I do two things, Rennie, before we close up? One is I want to give you a hug in front of thousands and thousands of people. And number two is leave everybody with a blessing. How's that?

Rennie Gabriel  22:56
That sounds beautiful.

Barry Shore  22:57
Okay, so let's see what HUG stands for - remember I'm unlocking the secrets of everyday words. HUG stands for Harmonizing, Unlimited Giving. Harmonizing Unlimited Giving. So here we go 1, 2, 3. Ohhhhhh . . . . . And our blessing for everybody is go forth, live exuberantly, spread the seeds of joy, happiness, peace and love. Go MAD. Go make a difference.

Rennie Gabriel  23:40
