Episode Transcription

Rennie Gabriel  00:10
Hi, folks, welcome to Episode 59 of the Wealth On Any Income podcast. This is where we talk about money tips, techniques, attitudes, information and provide inspiration. I'm your host, Rennie Gabriel. In past episodes, we spoke about how to build an income and expense report, how to measure the level of pleasure based on where you spend your money, how to track your money in 5 -10 seconds, and what to look for on a net worth statement to see how close you are to Complete Financial Choice™. And last week, we had Chris Gomberg, who spoke about the things we need to think about when we look at retirement that has nothing to do with money. Today, we have as our guest, Tom Bailey. Tom is the founder of Succeed Through Speaking, and he spent the first 25 years of his life becoming an expert at avoiding public speaking, presenting and being in front of groups of people. However, since overcoming his life limiting fear of speaking and presenting, he's experienced firsthand how people can succeed through speaking. He now helps other entrepreneurs, experts, coaches, and consultants use speaking to raise their profile and gain new clients. Now, Tom, as you know, 100% of the profits from the work I do go to charity. And I'm wondering if there's a particular charity that you support, and if so, what they do?

Tom Bailey  01:38
Absolutely. Well, first of all, thank you so much for inviting me onto the show today, I really appreciate it. So a charity that is really close to my heart here in the UK is Alzheimer's Research UK. And they're the leading charity dedicated to looking into diagnostics and causes and prevention of dementia across the UK. By the way, there's now over a million people here in the UK that are living with dementia, and it's a charity that's really close to my heart.

Rennie Gabriel  02:07
Yeah, there are times I think, hopefully they show up in the United States for me personally.

Tom Bailey  02:14
Yeah, I'm sure.

Rennie Gabriel  02:16
Well, I gave a hint in the introduction to what you do, and kind of why. But tell me more.

Tom Bailey  02:23
Yeah, absolutely. So I think the first thing to mention was that I was my first client. And I mentioned that in the bio that, you know, I had a huge fear of public speaking, social anxiety, and being on camera now just isn't something that I would have been doing just a few years ago. And ultimately, what this meant was that it held me back in jobs, in relationships and starting my business. Because without being able to confidently stand up and speak in front of people, I remained in the shadows. I was unknown. And that's not a very good place to be if you're looking to start a business. So and just to add to that, one thing that I do now is I work with, like you said, entrepreneurs, experts, coaches and consultants, who are typically hidden, and they're the best kept secret in their market. And I help them to use speaking, presenting, to build their confidence and build their profile in their industry.

Rennie Gabriel  03:21
Got it. Great. Thank you. Well, I also have a hint when you're talking about being held back in jobs and relationships. But I'm guessing maybe there was . . . Well, I'll ask it this way. What was the biggest failure, whether it was in personal, your personal life or business life? And then I'm going to ask you, what was your biggest insight from that failure?

Tom Bailey  03:46
Absolutely. And I think the biggest failure looking back for me was avoidance. And you mentioned it in the bio. I became an expert at avoiding public speaking. And the reason why I did this, I now know is it's because of, you know, fear, and the fight or flight, response to fear. And ultimately, by avoiding speaking, avoiding presenting, avoiding going on camera, and it really did hold me back. And I've since done a lot of research. And one of the things that comes up a lot is Brené Brown, who talks a lot about vulnerability. And for me, I realized that I needed to be more vulnerable and be okay with being uncomfortable and just getting myself out there.

Rennie Gabriel  04:32
Yeah. And what I've discovered is when people are relating to you from the front that you put on, and they don't accept you, then you can say, Well, yeah, they didn't accept, you know, the false front I was putting on.

Tom Bailey  04:49
Exactly.

Rennie Gabriel  04:49
And so the fear is if they, if you let people know who you really are, and then they reject that, I guess that would be a lot more painful.

Tom Bailey  04:57
Yeah, yeah. And, and that's where a lot of this comes from, and fear of speaking like other anxieties comes down to fear of others opinions, fear of judgment, fear of failure, fear of embarrassing ourselves. And ultimately this for some people can be so overwhelming that it stops us in our tracks. And it means that we don't do anything at all.

Rennie Gabriel  05:17
Exactly. So I'm going to guess these are the typical feelings your prospects experience. Are there other things as well?

Tom Bailey  05:28
Yeah, I'll talk about fear and limiting beliefs. And I think one thing that I didn't dive into on the last question was the insight. And that, for me was, it comes back to a famous quote from Michael Jordan. He famously said, 'You miss 100% of the shots that you don't take.' And that was a real big insight for me, because, ultimately, I needed to start saying yes to things. And that's what I talk about with my clients a lot is, you know, say yes to more things. And even if you take that shot, and you miss, and it goes wrong, it's okay, because it's been a great learning experience for the next time. And just one thing to add now to your next question, which is around the feelings or experiences they may have, and ultimately, again, it comes down to fears and limiting beliefs. So a fear of speaking will normally show up as a "what if" question. So, what if? What if I embarrass myself? What if I'm speaking, and I forget my lines? What if the audience don't like me? And what if I'm on Zoom, and the technology fails? You know, all these "what if" questions are what normally show up, and they can become so overwhelming that they stop us from taking action.

Rennie Gabriel  06:38
Yeah. And I experienced that on my TED talk. I remember in the rehearsal, I got as far as saying, 'Hi, my name is, Rennie Gabriel.' And then blanked out. I literally could not remember the first sentence.

Tom Bailey  06:59
And that for a lot of people would stop them even getting as far as you did.

Rennie Gabriel  07:03
Yes. And believe me, that created a lot of fear, like, 'Oh, my gosh, when I actually do this TED talk, you know, I don't want that to happen.'

Tom Bailey  07:12
Absolutely not.

Rennie Gabriel  07:13
You know, would you say there are common mistakes that your prospects make? I'm guessing, maybe asking the "what if" questions is one of them. Is there anything else?

Tom Bailey  07:26
Yeah, I mean, ultimately, my ideal clients, you know, my audience are entrepreneurs, they're business owners, they're coaches. And the common mistakes that they're making is because they're avoiding going on camera, because they're avoiding using speaking to grow their business, the alternative to that is them just posting content on social media. And it's not them. It's not their video. It's not their voice. It's normally quotes from other people, images from other people, and text-based posts. And for me, that's a big mistake. Because nowadays, customers want to find out about the real person behind the business. They want that authentic business leader to really show up on social. So yeah, for me, one big mistake is avoiding this and continuing to put out content which is inauthentic and not going to help you connect with the audience.

Rennie Gabriel  08:26
Yeah, inauthentic content, I think that's a big deal. So the people who work with you, what benefit, goal or objective, outcome, whatever, do they end up achieving following your advice? And do you have actually a case study or a story you can illustrate?

Tom Bailey  08:46
Yeah, exactly. So we're doing it right now, both of us. So one of the big outcomes is visibility, its positioning, its credibility. And I always used to say that pre-COVID, the person stood at the front of the room is usually once seen as the leader. And it comes up the same for virtual as well. So on Zoom, now, this is your show, you know, you've got some credibility in there. You're the host of your own show. And people watch this and think, Well, you know, Rennie's obviously doing some great things. He's got his own podcast. And so that's one of the big benefits here of using speaking to grow your credibility is to position yourself as an expert in your industry. And, you know, lots of my clients that I've worked with over the past couple of years have been amazing at what they do. They've been experts. They're great graphic designers, great business owners, great coaches, consultants, entrepreneurs, but nobody knew about them apart from their small circle of existing clients. So the big benefit of what I teach is to grow your positioning and raise your profile on mass in front of big audiences.

Rennie Gabriel  09:54
I get it. Is there a particular client that you saw have this transformation?

Tom Bailey  10:00
Yeah, exactly. So there's this one here in the UK that I wanted to talk about. So, and we've got one of my clients called Manny, who is the CEO and founder of The Coding School in the UK, which is one of the UK's largest coding schools for children. Now, Manny is amazing at what he does, great business leader, but he ran his business from behind the business. So nobody got to see him. Nobody got to hear from him. Nobody got to meet him as such, because a lot of what he did was behind his laptop screen. So by going out there and speaking, presenting, building up his confidence, he ended up doing a keynote speech in front of over 450 people. And what this led to was press and media coverage, because local news stations also wanted to then interview him. And ultimately, this grew his exposure, grew his LinkedIn following significantly, and also then grew the business as well.

Rennie Gabriel  11:00
Got it. And is there a valuable free resource that you can direct people to that will further help them solve this problem? Do you have something?

Tom Bailey  11:10
Yeah, absolutely. So one thing that I do every month is I run a Master Class, which goes into the topic of how to succeed through speaking. And the best place for people to find that is to go directly to my website, which is succeedthroughspeaking.com. And on the homepage there, there'll be a link to click on so you can get in and register for the next Masterclass that happens. And they happen every month. So there'll be one coming up soon, I'm sure.

Rennie Gabriel  11:38
Oh, fabulous. Okay, I'll make sure to put that link in the show notes. And is there a question that I should have asked you, that would give value to my listening audience and obviously provide that answer?

Tom Bailey  11:52
Yeah, absolutely. And I think that, again, back to what we're doing right now is, how can I use podcasting to grow my business? And for me, there's three main advantages or benefits from podcasting. You've got the perspective of being a host - so hosting my own podcast. You've got being a guest on other people's podcasts. And then you've also got the opportunity to repurpose the content that comes out of the episode as well. So for me, being a host means that you can learn a lot. So, you get to meet great people, I'm sure, Rennie, and learn lots of new insights and information from your guests. But also that it's sometimes these opportunities to create cross-promotional partnership, JV opportunities as well. So that's another great reason to host a podcast. And in terms of being a guest on a podcast, the two main reasons for me, is one, to promote yourself and what you do. So I've just told you all about my free Masterclass coming up next month, great opportunity to position that, and, but also to grow my network. You know, I now I'm building a relationship with you, Rennie, and other people that I meet on podcasts. And finally, repurposing content. Each time that I create a podcast episode, I get a written transcript, which becomes a blog post. I get a video which goes on YouTube. I get an audio file, which goes on Apple, Spotify, Google, all over the place. And I can also turn that 20-minute piece of content into smaller bite sized chunks of content - Audiograms, TikTok Reels, Instagram videos as well. So it's a great opportunity to create great content for your social platforms.

Rennie Gabriel  13:30
Yeah, that makes so much sense. I mean, the repurposing as an example, I did quite a few episodes, reading my book, and then used those episodes to convert into an audio book that can be purchased, that I can sell on my website. So yeah, repurposing is fabulous.

Tom Bailey  13:53
Absolutely couldn't agree more.

Rennie Gabriel  13:55
Tom, I want to thank you for being on the show.

Tom Bailey  13:59
